Government Funding
Provide Direct Funding
There are very few resources dedicated solely to the production of ownership housing. Ownership production is excluded from nearly 100% of all government funded programs. Funds that are intended to promote homeownership are generally allocated to downpayment assistance (DPA). DPA alone only drives up prices when there is a housing shortage. Smart economic policy must address supply and demand. Examine how tax dollars for housing are allocated in your community - is it proportionate to the need?
Local governments have the power to invest in ownership supply through Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds. Partnerships with nonprofits can preserve older housing stock and build new entry level homes for purchase by lower-income households.
Tax Credits + Incentives
Advocate for tax incentives and credits that reduce the cost of homebuilding, including property tax exemptions and tax breaks for developers that partner with Habitat.
Support Housing Trust Funds
By supporting or establishing housing trust funds, we can create a dedicated source of funding for affordable homeownership production and programs.
